Everything We Know About ‘Venom: The Last Dance

After several postponements, the cool yet crime-fighter Venom returns to theaters! Venom 3: The Last Dance hits the big screen on October 25, 2024 finally.

The original Venom movie was released back in 2018. This movie made an unbelievable $850 million! Following this success, a sequel titled Let There Be Carnage came out in 2021 and also did very well at the box office – it grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide.

With such huge box office numbers behind them, it’s no surprise that Sony Pictures wanted to place Venom 3 in a key slot close to the holiday season when most big budget blockbusters are traditionally released.

Originally The Last Dance had been slated for release in July 2024 but production was marred by strikes from both writers and actors within the film industry causing significant delays. Sony had no option but to postpone the premiere date twice pushing it back first to November and finally settling on October 25th.

But now the wait is over! This zany alien buddy comedy concludes with what promises to be an epic third instalment but is it any good? We’ll soon find out!

The Insane Trailer Breakdown

One hell of a plot is set up in the Last Dance trailer. Having become wanted fugitives following events from previous two films, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and venom- his extraterrestrial symbiote buddy are now on the run.

A shady government group is hunting them down hard. They want to keep aliens like Venom a total secret from the world. But Eddie and Venom have an even bigger problem – a full-on invasion of alien symbiotes from Venom’s home planet is headed to Earth!

If the symbiotes take over, it will mean complete chaos and destruction for the human race. So not only are the mismatched buddies the weirdest duo on the run, they also have to stop this apocalyptic alien takeover from happening.

The trailer mixes big laughs from the incompatible Eddie and Venom with some insane, world-ending action sequences. We see glimpses of Venom taking over the body of a horse in one wig-out scene.

We also get to see the new cast members like Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor in a mystery role. Is he reprising his Marvel villain Mordo or playing someone new? Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple also joins as a new lead character.

But the biggest draw is just watching Tom Hardy go completely bonkers as both the nervous human Eddie and the snarling, drooling monster Venom. He makes their bizarre relationship totally hilarious and believable at the same time.

If the trailer delivers on its promises, The Last Dance will provide an insane but heartfelt final chapter for the weirdest buddies in superhero movies.

The Supporting Cast Isn’t Used Well

Unfortunately, one of the film’s biggest weaknesses is how it wastes its great supporting cast of new characters. Despite being a big name Oscar nominee, Chiwetel Ejiofor only has a couple forgettable minutes as a government agent pursuing Eddie and Venom.

Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple gets more to do as a potential love interest, and she has good chemistry with Hardy. But her character isn’t developed enough to really matter beyond a few scenes.

Rhys Ifans, who played the Lizard in previous Spider-Man movies, gets an extremely brief cameo appearance that goes nowhere.

The most memorable new cast member is easily Stephen Graham as Detective Mulligan. He provides great comedic relief as a tough cop buddy always cracking jokes at Eddie’s expense. His potential to become the heroic symbiote Toxin is also teased for future installments.

But at the end of the day, this is 100% Tom Hardy’s movie as the human Eddie and his slimy alien Venom. His absolutely committed dual performance as the bickering odd couple makes the whole wild ride worth it.

A Fitting Farewell To Venom

The highest compliment I can give Venom 3: The Last Dance is that it honestly does work as a suitably insane but also heartfelt final chapter for this big screen version of the Marvel antihero.

There are times when the overlong runtime and huge number of plots become pretty overwhelming and repetitive, especially by the climax. And it’s a huge missed opportunity not to properly utilize great actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rhys Ifans in more than glorified cameo roles.

But Tom Hardy’s unrelenting dedication to making Eddie Brock and Venom feel like a real couple MAKES this movie. Through sheer force of personality, he single-handedly ties together all the unrestrained zaniness with moments of real emotional resonance.

In the end, The Last Dance understands exactly what makes the Venom franchise special – going completely over-the-top with the biting humor and bonkers alien action sequences, but also taking the character relationship seriously enough for you to invest emotionally.
